WSB Rounds 3 and 4

R3 - Donington Park - Great Britan
Friday free practice was a wet and cold start to the first European race of the 2007 WSBK championship but the conditions were all too familiar for Dean and after a steady session he finished the day 11th fastest in the wet and 18th fastest in the damp conditions.

Dean commented; "It was really good to be back on home soil and at one of my favourite race tracks, the Pedercini team were in great spirit and it was a very positive atmosphere all weekend, Damian Molyneux from Siboni was also present for the first time along with all of my UK based personal sponsors, Bradgate Containers, Unibox, Weise, Nzime, Teknic, Knox, Gridgear, Angel Racing and Hi-Peak."

Saturday morning qualifying session was very important as it was Dean's last chance to get in the Superpole qualifying session and on to the first 4 rows. For most of the session he was around 15th-17th place and was making his lap times very comfortably and on race tyres. With 10 minutes left to qualify Dean pitted and opted to fit a soft race tyre in order to gain extra grip and hopefully put in a faster lap, unfortunately the tyre didn't give Dean the results he was expecting and his lap times didn't improve and consequently he dropped to 21st . During the afternoon free practice Dean continued with the same set up and tested a few different rear tyres for the race and his lap times dropped, eventually finishing the session in 17th place. He then went on to follow this with a 15th place in Sunday morning warm up.

Race 1 was a cold race and for the first four laps Dean had very little rear grip and it was very hard to get drive out of the turns, this left him tangled with slower riders and his chance of points were disappearing fast. Dean began to push hard and work his way up through the pack. By the end of the race he had pulled 10 seconds back on the DFX Honda rider Michel Fabrizio but couldn't get close enough to pass, crossing the line in 15th place and landing another valuable point for the Siboni sponsored Team Pedercini.

Race 2 was a much better race from the start, Dean's lap times were over a second per lap faster and he managed to tag on to the back of a group which went all the way to 12th place. Dean's pace was much faster than the riders in front, but his progression was cut short due to a small electrical fault and he was forced to retire.

"Despite being forced out of race 2, this weekend has been fantastic and I would again like to thank all of my sponsors for their support." Added Dean

Next round Valencia, Spain. 14/4/07

R4 - Valencia - Spain
Dean had been looking forward to Valencia since the race two DNF at Donington park and he really didn't see the weekend turning out as it did!

Over the early part of the season Dean and Team Pedercini have made a lot of changes on the bike to try and gain some more confidence in the front end and at Donington it was all working really well. Dean was running the bike through the turns faster and holding better lines, something that is crucial for good times at Valencia.

On arrival at Valencia it was clear that the weather was pretty much going to be wet for the whole of the race weekend. According to the other riders it is very slippery when wet, and after getting rain in Australia, Donington and all of his pre-season tests, Dean really wasn't over excited about more rain. On Friday afternoon there was a full dry session, it was still damp in places but good enough for fast lap times, well it should have been! Dean was still having grip issues on the rear and after a few near high sides his trust in the grip was shot. Dean Commented "I have crashed more at Valencia this year than I usually do in a full season so I stopped trying so hard and just continued to get as many laps in a possible before the session finished and get my bike and myself feeling better for the following day."

In the Saturday morning qualifying session it was wet and as Dean had previously been warned it was very slippery. Despite the lack of grip Dean felt really good on the bike and was running in the top five, he was just about to come back to the pits to make some alterations to the bike when he had a really awkward highside. Dean said "I went down pretty hard on my head and arm and the bike was in a real mess so there was a joint decision between my self and the team to sit out the remainder of the session as it was too wet to improve on dry lap times. Afternoon practice again was wet and I still felt a bit bashed around after my crash so for safety reasons I just did a handful of laps on my spare bike to check that the set up was OK for a wet race and the retired to the Clinica Mobile."

After a rather un-successful weekend Dean was really fired up for race day but on his out lap of warm up the bike started to misfire and he had to return straight to the pits and sit out the session. For race one it looked likely to be wet or at least damp, so the team prepared a wet setting on the bike and Dean took to a damp track with a dry line chosing to use slicks. This turned out to be a bad decision and the bike was very unstable. Dean wasn't making any ground on the riders in front and his lap times were just getting slower and slower and he eventually had to pit. Race two the bike was back on a full dry set up, the team wanted Dean to run a softer race tyre than race one so that he could go better in the early stages. It was a gamble but at this stage there was nothing to lose and at the start it really paid off, but six laps into the race Dean had no rear grip and he started to go backwards through the pack and by lap 10 it was just too dangerous to continue so again Dean pitted.

This weekend has taught both Dean and the team a great deal, it is all behind them now and they are all looking forward to Assen on the 29th April.
